About the Artist

William “Bill” Rabbit (1946 – 2012)

Cherokee National Treasure | Master Artist

Born in Casper, Wyoming, and raised with a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty, Bill Rabbit showed exceptional artistic talent from an early age. A proud Cherokee and Vietnam veteran, Bill was self-taught, blending vibrant colors and layered meaning to create works that reflect both his heritage and his spiritual vision.

Throughout his career, Bill received numerous honors including Cherokee National Treasure, Five Civilized Tribes Master Artist, I.A.C.A. Artist of the Year, and national recognition at the John F. Kennedy Center’s Night of the First Americans. His art is celebrated for its luminous, uplifting imagery and its ability to tell stories that bridge tradition and contemporary expression.

Bill often said, “If I died tomorrow, I would feel so blessed — and I hope God puts me in charge of painting rainbows.” His joyful spirit lives on through his family, his art, and the legacy he created with his daughter, artist Traci Rabbit.
