Fifteen hand-carved white marble bison march in procession along a strand of multi-color heishi beads — a powerful, meditative fetish necklace rooted in the Zuni tradition of animal carving.

Each bison is carved from smooth white marble, its form low and muscular with a pronounced hump, sturdy legs, and a single inset turquoise eye dot — the traditional offering that activates the fetish and connects the carving to the living spirit of the animal. The bison vary slightly in size and character, as handmade carvings always do, giving the necklace an organic, living quality. Between each figure, the strand is strung with fine heishi beads in warm brown shell, sky-blue turquoise, and cream — a classic Pueblo color combination that complements the pure white of the marble beautifully.

The necklace closes with a pair of oxidized silver cone end caps and a simple hook clasp — a traditional and secure Southwestern finishing detail consistent with the age and quality of the piece. The artist is unknown.

In many Native traditions, the bison fetish carries the energy of abundance, strength, and gratitude — a reminder of the sustaining power of the natural world.
