"The Testing", by Maddison Gore

Measurements: 22"w x 18"h framed

A striking charcoal on canvas composition capturing the raw intensity of a cowboy's test ride. Rendered in warm sepia tones, the piece depicts a skilled horseman working to break and train a spirited horse—a moment of tension, trust, and horsemanship frozen in time. Maddison Gore's masterful use of charcoal creates depth and movement, drawing the viewer into the dust and determination of the arena. The earthy palette and dynamic composition evoke the grit and tradition of Western horsemanship.

About the Artist: Maddison Gore

Maddison Gore is a self-taught charcoal artist based in Kingman, Arizona.

Born and raised in Orange County, California, Maddison is the wife of a firefighter and a mother of 4 whose creative journey began in 2010. Over the years, she has explored a wide range of mediums, including watercolor, graphic design, oil, acrylic, and tattooing.

In 2021, she discovered charcoal and was immediately drawn to its rich pigmentation, bold contrast, and the hands-on process of working with the medium. Her charcoal work began with wildlife and later grew into wildland fire, firefighters, and hotshot crews. Charcoal felt like a natural fit for these subjects because it captures the smoke, darkness, and contrast of the fireline.

Her work later expanded into military subjects, inspired by her patriotic upbringing and deep respect for those who serve and sacrifice. Over time, her love for old, vintage imagery and the western way of life inspired a growing body of work centered around cowboying, horses, ranch life, and the timeless spirit of the American West. She has begun learning the process of making her own charcoal and working to use natural elements in her drawings. This comes from a desire to understand how things are made, use what God has provided, and return to a more hands-on way of life rather than relying only on what is commercially made.

Her drawing is more than a creative practice. It is therapeutic, peaceful, and spiritual. In the midst of the busyness of motherhood and family life, creating gives her space to slow down, reflect, and talk with God. She sees each piece as a way to honor the beauty of God’s entire creation and the stories found within it.
