A stunning example of traditional Zuni fetish carving, this 6-Direction Mole is masterfully crafted by renowned Zuni artist Jayne Quam. The central figure is carved from lustrous black jet — a stone prized for its deep polish and its protective spiritual energy in Zuni tradition. Resting atop the jet mole is a medicine bundle of six smaller fetish animals, each representing one of the sacred cardinal directions. The bundle is tied with sinew and adorned with shell heishi, turquoise, and coral beads — offerings that honor the spirit within the stone. Each small fetish is individually carved from a different natural stone, showcasing the variety of materials and the meticulous skill of the carver.

Artist: Jayne Quam (Zuni Pueblo)
Materials: Jet, shell, turquoise, coral, spiny oyster, picture jasper, and mixed natural stones
Tribe: Zuni Pueblo

Zuni fetishes are believed to carry the living spirit of the animal and are traditionally used for protection, healing, and guidance. The Mole, as the keeper of the Earth direction, is associated with introspection, grounding, and the wisdom found within.
