Dave produces this piece as a true continuous-tone photographic fine-art print—not an inkjet. The image is printed from a digital master file onto silver-based photo paper, yielding the rich color and depth long associated with Ilfochrome/Cibachrome-style prints. After chemical development, the print is mounted to .063 aluminum for rigidity and flatness, then sealed under a UV- and scratch-resistant crystal-clear film for long-term protection. A Certificate of Authenticity is mounted on the back. Edition is limited to 100 and individually numbered.

This image is a 195-degree panaroamic view of Monument Valley on the Navajo Nation, capturing the striking monument known as monument Big Chief, with the West Mitten visible in the background. Big Chief, when viewed from the west, resembles the profile of a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress--an awe-inspiring natural sculpture that seems carved by time. This photograph was a result of 18 exposures-three rows of 6 RAW images each, meticulously stiched together to form a sweeping, high-resolution panorama. It's this technique that allows for such immersive views of the night sky.

I wanted Big Chief to be the dominant focal point in the photo, which meant I needed to be no more than half a mile from it. But that presented a major challenge: the closest the public is allowed to get is two miles, and a telephoto lens from that distance wouldn't preserve the correct proportions for the super wide-angle composition I envisioned.

Fortunately, after years of building trusted relationships with several Navajo families who live on and manange the land near Big Chief, I was granted special permission to enter with in half a mile of the monument. This area is private land, not accessible from the typical tourist routes through Monument Valley. According to the families, no one outside of their community had ever been granted permission to photograph Bigh Chief from this vantage point. I was humbled and honored to be the first.

My goal was to capture Big Chief with the full arc of the Milky Way stretching from north to south about it. Moonlight, coming from behind me, served as natural fill light on Big Chief and the distant valley, allowing the landscape to glow softly without the use of any artificial lighting. That night, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower graced the sky, and the image includes one of many meteors that streaked across the heavens. Not long after I completed the sequence of images, clouds began to roll in, obscuring the moon and darkening the sky. My window of opportunity had closed, but I had captured the moment. For this shot to come together, I needed everything to align:  access to a sacred and resticted location, the right season and moon phase, a clear night with minimal wind, the Milky Way rising in the perfect spot, and an active meteor shower.  That night, all of it came together.  I was truly blessed.
