Sterling Silver in Native American Jewelry
Sterling silver has been a cornerstone of Native American jewelry-making for over a century. Introduced through trade and colonial contact in the late 1800s, silver quickly became a favored material among Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi artisans. Navajo silversmiths were among the first to adopt its use, learning techniques from Mexican metalsmiths and blending them with their own cultural motifs to create bold, handcrafted jewelry that remains iconic today.
Sterling silver is composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. This composition is denoted by the ".925" stamp found on authentic pieces, ensuring durability while retaining the precious metal’s brilliance and softness for hand-tooling.
Most silver used today is mined in countries like Mexico, Peru, China, and the United States (notably Arizona and Nevada). Native artists often work with American-mined silver for its cultural and geographical ties to the Southwest.
Care Tips:
-
To maintain a bright, polished finish, gently clean sterling silver with a soft cloth or use a designated silver cleaning cloth to remove tarnish.
-
To preserve the natural oxidation or patina, which many collectors cherish for its depth and character, simply wear the jewelry regularly and avoid over-cleaning. The patina develops naturally over time and enhances the handmade detail and stamping of each piece.
Whether kept polished or allowed to age gracefully, sterling silver serves as both canvas and frame for the stunning stones and stories embedded in Native American jewelry.

How to Measure Your Wrist
Use a soft measuring tape (or a strip of paper and ruler) and wrap it snugly around your wrist, just above the wrist bone—where you would naturally wear your bracelet.

Rosales Cuffs: These often feature intricate inlay designs, which cannot be adjusted once made.
Yellowhorse Cuffs: Most have solid sterling construction with hand-soldered spheres, offering minimal flexibility but should still not be bent or stretched.
All other Native American made cuff bracelets with inlay cannot be adjusted and are typically one of a kind pieces that cannot be reordered exactly. Bracelets with a cabochon stone and silver cuff thin enough to bend may be adjusted with care.
Fit Preference
- Loose Fit: Best for stacking multiple bracelets or for a relaxed, casual look.
- Snug Fit: Best if wearing your cuff higher on your wrist or near your palm for a more secure feel.

How to Put On & Remove a Cuff Bracelet
To Put On:
- Hold the cuff opening at the soft spot just below your wrist bone (on the thumb side).
- Gently roll the cuff over that area—do not pull the ends apart.
- Twist slightly while pressing against the underside of your wrist until it slides into place.
To Remove:
- Reverse the process—roll the cuff off sideways over the same soft spot rather than prying the ends apart.
- Avoid flexing or spreading the metal, which can weaken solder joints or loosen inlay stones.
Important Note on Inlay Designs
Cuff bracelets with stone inlay designs cannot be adjusted.
Bending or reshaping these bracelets may cause the inlay stones to become loose or damaged.
Always select your size carefully and follow proper wear instructions to preserve the craftsmanship.
