This extraordinary vintage bolo tie is a wearable work of fine art — a large oval fossilized walrus ivory slide hand-engraved with a breathtaking scrimshaw grizzly bear portrait of exceptional quality. The bear's face fills the upper half of the ivory oval with commanding presence: every strand of fur, the deep-set eyes, the open mouth, and the rounded ears are rendered in fine crosshatch linework of remarkable precision and depth. Below the portrait, a bold bear paw print — five toe pads and a large palm pad with claw tips — grounds the composition in the natural world, the bear appearing to emerge from within his own track.

The ivory itself is warm cream with natural age patina and subtle crackling consistent with genuine fossilized walrus ivory — a material legally harvested and worked by Alaska Native artists under federal law. The slide is signed D. Sims in the lower margin, a mark of pride from a skilled Alaskan scrimshaw artist.

The 36" black braided cord is finished with gold-tone coil spring brass tips with polished ball ends — a classic Western bolo hardware pairing that complements the warm ivory tones of the slide beautifully.

Artisan Heritage

Signed by D. Sims (engraved on slide face), an Alaskan scrimshaw artist working in the tradition of walrus ivory engraving. Scrimshaw on fossilized walrus ivory is a legally protected art form practiced by Alaska Native artists — each piece is unique, the ivory itself a natural canvas shaped by centuries of time.
